Inspired by the real life Rockford Peaches team and the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in general, A League of Their Own tells the story of a group of women who found their calling on the baseball field while their husbands were off fighting in World War II. The league helped to fill the void left by the Major League male players who were also serving their country.

This is the often recalled scene from A League of Their Own in which Coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) lectures the team's right fielder Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram). When Dugan notices that Gardner has begun to cry, he utters the quote, "There's no crying in baseball."
