Product Description
It has been called "grisly," "sick," and "perverse," as well as "raw," "unshakeable," and "the movie that redefined horror." It was attacked by churches, banned by governments, and acclaimed by only the bravest of critics. It stunned audiences worldwide and set a new standard in movie terror forever. In 1974, writer-producer-directorTobe Hooper unleashed this dark, visionary tale about a group of five young friends who face a nightmare of torment at the hands of a depraved Texas clan. Today it remains unequaled as a landmark of outlaw filmmaking and unparalleled in its impact as perhaps the most frightening motion picture ever made.
Dark Sky Films presents this masterpiece like you've never seen or heard it before, newly transferred in High Definition from the 16mm camera originals, remixed in 5.1 and 2.0 Stereo Surround, and featuring never-before-seen Bonus Features produced exclusively for this definitive collection.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 3, 2010I lived in Texas in 1974 as a kid so it is strange to think that this movie was being made when I actually lived there. I saw this film for the first time only in the last couple of years, and was immediately sucked in and struck by this deeply disturbing film even from the first sounds of the shattering, disjointed music set against the backdrop of the over-saturated solar flares of the sun, or the opening shot of the melting bodies in the graveyard or the roadkill armadillo on the hot, dry Texas highway. Perhaps the root of the power and effectiveness of this movie is that at its core it touches on the normal things in life that should probably be okay under normal circumstances: taking a trip with friends, exploring an old house, helping someone out who needs a ride, running out of gas in an unfamiliar area, asking strangers for help, and trusting people. We might have done any one or all of these things at one time or another in our lives, but this movie can easily remind us that perhaps those are in fact not things we should do, or at least plan accordingly as to prevent them from happening so we don't find ourselves in the vulnerable position of being dependent on the help of strangers to get out of a situation. The five young friends (two are siblings, one of whom is confined to a wheelchair brilliantly played by Paul Partain) are all nice kids out to have some fun on a road trip and not cause anyone any trouble, but run into problems when they pick up a hitchhiker who seems harmless at first, and this is just the beginning of the problems that ensue for them. Things worsen when their van runs out of gas and the only gas station within miles has run dry (so they are told by the people working there who seem nice enough), waiting on the next fuel delivery later that afternoon. 1974 was during the height of the gas crunch and energy crisis of that era, so this scenario is absolutely and completely believable. The kids are informed that they can gas up later that day so why don't they stick around and come back then? In the meantime, they think they know where a relative's house used to be located, and they will explore the nearby property to pass the time until they can come back to fill up the tank and continue on their trip.
Lots of brilliant foreshadowing occur that are along the lines of southern gothic tradition (looking for an old waterhole where they used to swim as kids but when they stumble across it, it is all dried up); the abandoned old house that now has evidence that something strange has been going on there (the makers of The Blair Witch Project MUST have been influenced by the artifacts made for this movie), but the wheelchair-bound friend is unable to warn the others in time due to his immobility. He doesn't know what exactly he has found (mostly bones and feathers), but he is afraid and suspicious enough to try to alert his sister and their friends that something is wrong. After that, the discovery of a generator on the neighboring property alerts them that the neighbors must have fuel to run the generator and they knock on the door of the quaint farmhouse next to a field of beautiful Black-eyed Susans and the pretty white swing in the front yard to see if they can borrow some. When one enters the house but does not come back and the girlfriend subsequently goes in after him to see what is wrong, everything goes downhill from there.
Parts of this movie are still difficult to watch even by today's standards - and certainly the use of non-actors and no budget for special effects only served to make the finished movie even better and withstanding of time against ultimately bigger movie studios with larger budgets and CGI effects. This film will probably always stand up against and be the standard by which all other horror films to follow it are judged.
This film also sets the unprecedented standard of the lone female survivor heroine (this movie pre-dates John Carpenter's Halloween by 4 years) using nothing but the will to survive and strength to fight back physically against multiple male attackers who terrorize and torture her. That and a lot of running away and jumping through windows.

The package: The ultimate edition comes in a very nice packaging. I can't help but to give this packaging 5 stars. A tin case that is very nice to just look at and behold the beauty of horror that you hold in your hands. I'm going to buy a extra copy just so I can have one unopened this is so cool. Inside you will find 2 discs, one with the main movie and a few extras on it. The second disc is full of extra features that are sure to please! I found the discs a bit hard to take out of the case compaired to other packaging, but all and all that is no big deal when compaired to how nice this is. You will be proud to add this to your collection.
Spook Meter. 5 Stars!
I have seen many horror films over the years. Their are a lot of scary films out there, however this film takes scary to a whole new level. Sometimes you might watch a movie and say to yourself, this movie was scary. When I watched The Texas Chainsaw Massacre I felt truly scared! heart raced, and I just felt truly spooked. It's all in how this film captures your emotions. The way it was shot, the amazing acting leads one who watches this gem of a film to ask yourself. Does Leatherface really have this person captured for real? Yes, this film is that intense that it really makes you question at times, ummm what am I watching. What this captures so well is that raw human emotion, the fear! Many horror films never quite capture that and this one does for sure. It does such a great job with the intense screems and the raw emotions, it sets this films apart from all others. You feel that fear from the supurb acting and the result is your brought into the film and you feel the fear as well. The lack of a lot of music in the backround, really helps and makes it more creepy. The sounds that are used, fit the film perfectly and really add to rawness of it all. I can't even put into words what I truly want to say, this is truly that scary!
Gore Meter: 2 Stars. If your into tons of blood and gore, you won't find it here. Ahhh but don't fret, this film is so well done in terms of raw fear that you will not miss that extra blood. Yes there is some blood, but very little. This film proves that you can make a truly scary horror film and not pour on the blood.I found the amount of blood to be fine considering just how well done this is. I admit I can be a bit into gore and like a lot of gore in other films, but take it from me a gore hound. You will truly be scared stiff watching this and you won't miss the blood. YES this is truly that good!
Profanity Meter: 1 Strike. There is a few words, but overall this films has very little profanity which I did not miss at all.
Sexual Meter: 1 Strike. There are no women running around with no tops on. There are no makeout scenes, no kissing, no nothing. HAHAHAHA leave that to other movies, Leatherface has work to do!
Final thoughts. I give this film overall 5 stars for the way it just freaked me out! All these years later and this film does not have a dated feel to it. Now thats what I call amazing! The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is in my opinion the greatest and most scary horror film ever made that I have seen. It simply does not get better then this. You don't need excessive blood or a high budget to make a film that will scare the hell out of you. It just takes supurb acting, the right people to play the rolls, and some amazing directing!
I'm going to step up here and say once again. This original Texas Chain Saw Massacre IS the greatest horror film EVER made!!

5.0 out of 5 stars HD is the future!!
If you're a fan of this film then this is the copy to have. My other "digitally remastered" copy was what I regarded as the definitive...until I saw this! The 2-disc set comes in a magnificent metal case with fantastic atrwork. There's heaps of extras, although most of them are on the other releases but still a few new features. And the best part is the HD quality and 5.1 remix. The colours are noticably deeper and the detail is more than one thought possible from a film shot on 16mm. You can see every little detail with a very wide tonal range. As for the film, it's still a classic and way ahead of its time. There's no film with such a claustrophobic atmosphere. This is the ultimate edition for sure until the DTS version is released. Buy it now!
