Have you got them? I've got them. Maybe we all have 'em.

Films we really like, but when we mention them to another party, the invariable response we meet is the Big D (for "Duhhhhhhh?"). How can they be so obscure when they're so good? But they are.

Here are some of mine:

If I Were King (1938): Ronald Colman as Francois Villon and Basil Rathbone giving the performance of his life as Louis XI.

The Woman In White (1948): Hollywood treatment of Wilkie Collins' creepy tale of madness and identity theft, with Sidney Greenstreet oozing dignified evil from every pore as Fosco.

Otley (1968): swinging 60s spy spoof, memorable for assembling vast numbers of British character actors, a witty script by Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, Tom Courtenay in the title role and . . . ahhhhhhh . . . Romy Schneider.

Endless Night (1972): highly atmospheric treatment of an unusually intense, psychological novel by Agatha Christie, with Hywel Bennett going brilliantly bananas and a score by Bernard Herrmann.

Anyone got any comments on the above, or any private pleasures of your own you'd like to share with the rest of us?
