View Full Version : Golden Oldie Of The Week
Byron Orlock
Here's an idea for those who love the magic movies of yesteryear and a good wallow in nostalgia for the smoke-filled one-and-nines (about 90 cents worth of cinema seat, not counting popcorn):
A number of us might get together, gather our names into a list, then the first name nominate a particular film, actor, director or other phenomenon of the Golden Age. The rest of the participants (and anyone else who found the topic interesting) would then post relevant opinions, facts, anecdotes etc . . . 7 days later, the second name nominates another subject, etc etc. With any luck, having just a week to have their say would concentrate the minds of the contributors wonderfully.
Of course, first of all we'd have to define the term "Golden Age". I'd go for anything prior to 1980, but that's a personal thing and a lively debate on the subject wouldn't go amiss.
Anyone interested, or anyone with a good reason why this is the dumbest idea since cell phones, feel free to put your oar in now.

Count me in and I like that idea anything before 1980 or even earlier, I'd even say nothing after 1970, but that's just one woman's opinion.

By gum, I've found my Steve McQueen already! Bob Vaughan, are you out there?

I'm in for sure, I personally am against the pre 80s restriction as in my opinion any in depth discussion of a good movie is worthwhile. If we were to make any kind of restrictions it'd be trying to make sure there are quality posts on each thread. Also as much as I'd like to ensure classic movies get discussed this is the Sidestream forum as well as the Old School.
On the other hand, I'm really not bothered and if we feel that this forum lacks discussion of old films and so want to target that directly. I am still deffinately in.
Oh also, I personally feel it is vital that the person who selects the topic of that week must write an indepth review / post to kick things off.

Welome aboard, cicero!

With you there, old sport, and if anyone wants to open a "Good Movie Thread" I'd be glad to contribute. Though since one man's "quality" is another man's "dreck", I pity anyone trying to moderate. Also I agree it would be good to see more discussion of Sidestream films. For the moment, though, I wanted to restrict the topic under discussion within manageable (I hope) parameters.

Personably that would suit me. I wonder though if such an injunction might not seem too stern for our merry little band of lotus-eaters. On tenterhooks I await developments.
Ozma
I do agree there are some newer films I would consider "classic" Memento springs to mind. And Goodfellas.
I am easy, but for my money, well atleast when it is my turn, I am going for something older. But if somebody wants to do something newer then they should have to support their decision. Whether it is a newer film or a modern/current director.
Although the title of the thread is Golden Oldie of The Week.

I have a question, what if we are talking about a film that is say 63 years old. Do we have to be concerned with spoilers ? I'd hate to ruin a good film for somebody that perhaps has not seen it before. But then again if it is a well known classic, perhaps they would have already seen it or have heard about it anyway. It is hard to talk of the nuiances of a film without talking about the plot.

Fantastic idea and should be a very interesting thread to read. I too will probably tend towards films before 1970 but am open to discussing anything!

Can't think of anyone I'd be happier to have aboard, Silver.
Still on the subject of cut-off points (if we agree to have one, natch: I am nothing if not democratic) - I have heard it said that the moment the Studio System knew it had died was when the old moguls decided to recapture the success of The Sound Of Music, watched Star! flop and realised they didn't know what the public wanted any more.
1968, anyone?
SilverScreenAddict
I'll cast a vote for 1968.
Ozma
Sounds good to me too. But if we talk about a director, can he have made something after 1968 though?? As long as the majority of his films are from earlier decades.

Good point, and ditto with actors. I'd suggest we go for those whose finest hour came before 1968. And no, I don't want to define the term.
cicero
Again I must protest to such a restriction. I beg you all to at least allow the 70s into the talks. There were so many truely amazing films in that decade and it's a time period i feel is now becoming classic and the movies were so much more controversial and interesting than the decades that came after.
Also I'm not sure if this has been agreed on, but I am hoping that each new movie of the week gets its own thread and they aren't all just piled into one over long thread. My reasoning is that if we get a movie that is excelent, but the week runs out we don't have to stop discussing it, because the thread is now focused on the new movie.
Also Byron will you be kickstarting us off this weekend? I assume weekends will be the time the new thread should be made.

With you there, Marcus Tullius. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Omen, Cabaret, Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws, Julia . . . I'm hoping that as more people join, opinion will coalesce and boundaries will define themselves. Not just a terminus ad quem, but also a quo. Should we include silent movies?

Don't see a problem with this one. If a week's topic is so red-hot that people want to go on discussing it after the week's over, then there's nothing to stop one of us from starting a new thread to continue the debate while "Golden Oldies" moves on to the next one.
Also Byron will you be kickstarting us off this weekend? I assume weekends will be the time the new thread should be made.
Erk. I was afraid someone would ask me that. The answer is Yes, in spite of a quite ridiculous attack of butterflies. If we still don't have a big members' register by Saturday, we can start anyway and hope Word Of Mouth will encourage others to add their names to the list later. Hopefully Be There Or Be Square will shortly become the Order of the Day.
P.S. While I was grinding my brain over the above, I see Oz has come in with much eminent sense, with all of which I wholly concur.
Concerning your earlier question about spoilers, I agree it seems a tad over-scrupulous to worry about giving away the identity of the villain of, say, The Hound Of The Baskervilles. Is it possible to give the whole thread a Health Warning and then carry on regardless?
Paler Shade
Put me in coach.
(And you just soooooo know what movie I'm a pickin'!) ;)
Ozma
Oh I agree a new thread of course for each topic.
When it is your turn you can talk about any film/director you want, we won't chastise you, will we Silver and Byron.
Even though the title is Golden Oldie of The Week, but since only 5 of us have signed up, I think we better bend the time restraints.
Just my thoughts.

I'd hope we could include silent films. I've a dear love for a particular silent film and would love to discuss it.

Each of us can make a new thread to announce our pick of the week, just like we do for The Weekly Theme.
I am still wondering is we have to worry about spoilers, I say damn the torpedos and full speed ahead. It will really be hard to discuss a film in depth without giving away some or all of the plot.
Byron Orlock
For those now getting as confused as I am (impossible), I should explain that while I was rewriting my previous post to acommodate Ozma's one, she was doing ditto so that her amended one is now shown after mine. Or was when I started typing this. I refuse to do another rewrite, whatever the state of affairs may be when I submit this.
Paler! My man! Welcome back to the fight - this time I know our side will win.

Such kindness is no more than I would have expected from you, Silver, the more so for being all unmerited, especially in your erudite company.

Don't be sorry, except for exposing me as a twit. Of course each theme will have a separate thread and can continue as long as there's inspiration in our heads, a passage in my throat and drink in Illyria.

Ladies, ladies! Please stop this adulation. Not that I don't like it, but I see I quoted Shakespeare in Post # 20 and that's a sign I'm getting to big for my boots.

I so heard, Byron!
But straying from topic is oh so fun :D
Okay, so do we have boundaries/dates/years set for this thread yet or is it still in the working?
Byron Orlock
As far as I can see, the remit ranges from the day the Brothers Lumiére got out of nappies to either 1968 or 1980 but the jury is still out.
Ozma
I am probably going with the 40's for the most part, or early 50's, but then again a few of my favs are silents as well. I was thinking yesterday of ideas, and I have way too many. I have favortie movies in all decades, favorite actors and some of my favorite directors/actors have very long illustrious careers.
I don't care if somebody want to do a quality film from the 70's, but I hate to see us going must past that. I do believe there are films out there that are destined to be classics from that era, but from where I am sitting it just seems like yesterday.
cicero
It all sounds good to me and I know my first film already. The rules are all going well and of course like all things that last we will end up breaking them. All I hope is that we actually stay with this and it doesn't die out after a few goes like say the Movie of the Week club we tried.
Also we deffinately put spoilers into each thread. I mean you can't really discuss a movie without talking about the ending and that's what this is all about, great discussion.
I am going to make a commitment that each time I haven't seen the movie of the week I will actively go out and see it.

And if somebody brings up a film I haven't seen I will find it and watch it as well.
Byron Orlock
I'm delighted to see my idea inspiring such enthusiasm.
I am already preparing large numbers of ice cubes, which tomorrow I shall be inserting in a towel round my head as I work on the intro to my first Golden Oldie thread.
That's a great idea of yours, cicero. I'll try to follow your example of getting to see every film mentioned likewise. Though of course if anyone chooses to devote a week to The Brain From Planet Arous my resources may get a trifle stretched.

I too will do my best to find and watch films to be discussed that I haven't seen. Since our group is relatively small at the moment, everyone having seen the film will make for a much more lively discussion!

The first movie approaches...I'm really excited.
Ozma
Me too, and last night we watched Bonnie and Clyde, and that was made in 1967, I can't even believe it has been 40 years. I will say that it is most certainly a golden oldie.
cicero
Oh I am next! I'll be writing mine up tomorrow. Hope you're all excited.
