Hedy Lamarr

She is so much more than a joke in a Mel Brooks movie.

She is also a famous inventor. Lamarr's frequency-hopping idea served as the basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology used in devices ranging from cordless telephones to WiFi Internet connections.

In 1933 she was the first actress to appear nude in a film, Ecstasy, a Czech film.

I just think she is a fascinating, gorgeous woman and wanted to share.

That's what I'd always heard, but here's what it says in The Guinness Book Of Film Facts And Feats:

"The sensation caused in the 1930s by Hedy Lamarr's nude bathing scenes in Extase (Cz 33) has given wide currency to the mistaken idea that Miss Lamarr was the first nude actress on screen. She was not even the first nude in Czech movies, a distinction earned by Ira Rina in Gustav Muchaty's Eroticon (Cz 29)."

They give the first nude actress on screen as Jehanna d'Alcy in Aprés Le Balle Tub (Fr 1897) by Georges Melies, who later married her. The first star player to appear nude in a feature film was Annette Kellerman in Fox's Daughter of the Gods (US 16).

All is not lost, however! After her swim, Hedy Lamarr goes on to have (simulated) sex with an engineer in a hut. "Curiously Extase is celebrated as the first motion picture containing a nude scene, which it wasn't, rather than the first to show sexual intercourse, which it was."

Oh well, I was close!
