View Full Version : Jean Rollin
Byron Orlock
Anyone out there have an opinion on this guy?
I keep hearing him described as "hack director, Jean Rollin", but I don't agree.
Jess Franco is the hack. Rollin has real vision, I think. The fact that he hasn't the talent to express it is netiher here nor there.

I've seen a couple of Rollin films and I have 'Les Frisson Des Vampires'. I find his films great to look at ..but pretty badly acted (well ,when the cast is made of of non professional friends and aquaintances (sp?) of the director..what can be expected?)
His costumes and locations are great but the stories and acting just don't cut it for me. I gather he drives around France 'til he finds a nice location (church, castle etc) then writes a script to fit it..
However I love the poster for 'Les Frisson..' and for many years I had a leather biker jacket which I hand painted the central figure and title script from it on the back of..

I wore it for years until it was falling to bits and didn't fit anymore. The 17 yr old daughter of a friend once told me "when you die..that jacket is mine!!" So I thought I'd save her the wait and gave it to her for her 17th birthday. I've never seen her out of it since..her mum says she's slept in it!

Ta, Chas.
Hadn't seen the poster before.
There's something about the way Rollin so obviously relies on whatever comes into his head at that moment which perversely reminds me of (Go on then, shoot me) Bunuel.
And the blonde girl in Requiem For A Vampire is seriously, er, well, phwoarrrr . . .

Check out this (http://www.gotterdammerung.org/film/people/female/france/gallery-001.html) link, Byron. Photos of French actresses incuding the four 'stars' of 'RfaV': Marie-Pierre Castel (whom I suspect is the 'phwoaaar!' blonde), Mireille Dargent, Louise Dhour and if you forward to the third gallery on that link Dominique Toussaint complete with cheesy fangs...
There's quite a selection of French actresses on that site..admittedly many I'm not familiar with..

Another one for the Favourites box! Many thanks, Charlie.
Ooh la la, Marie-Pierre Castell! A few years ago Channel 4 did a documentary about Rollin. According to M-P C, he was terrified of her mother, and told her all manner of lies about what a wholesome film they were making together.
Classic final line from Fascination: "How beautiful you look, with blood on your lips . . ."
