Almost a Masterpiece

I don't think we've done a thread on this before, but my apologies if I am wrong. I've been thinking recently about movies that have brilliant individual parts, but somehow as a whole they fall short of the mark. Almost as if they had some vital component missing.

A good example that springs to my mind is Gangs of New York. The individual actors are amazing especially Daniel Day Lewis, the movie is visually incredible and the story should be riveting, but it somehow falls short. The movie doesn't build well and the conclusions more confused than anything else.

So what other movies can you guys think of that fall into this same criteria and why do you think they fell short?
