Anyone seen this?

Made in 1995 and based on a successful Italian novel and then a comic book (which I believe was published in the USA Cemetery Man..as was the DVD).

It tells the story of a custodian of a little Italian cemetery where, for reasons not explained, the dead rise 7 days after burial. The custodian, Francisco Dellamorte (Rupert Everett) is used to this and casualy shoots any 'returners' in the head or smashes their heads with shovel or pickaxe.

He is assisted by a monosyllabic, feeble minded grave digger called Gnarghie (who's only response to anything is "Gnarg!"). No one seems to be aware of the returning corpses apart from these two.

Everett meets a beautiful woman..(well three beautiful women..all played by the same actress) but their love is thwarted everytime for one reason or another. He has conversations with the Angel of Death..and goes on a bit of a killing spree.

I'll be honest..this is a very surreal film. Quite odd in parts but strangely enjoyable. It is also incredibly and graphically gory. Heads blown apart, sliced and smashed..bodies run over and splattered..we aren't spared any of this.

The ending is one of those 'what the f...?' type endings that send you off to the IMDb to see what other folk made of it and what they thought of the ending.

There are several 'theories' as to what the film is about on there..I haven't made up my mind which one I follow but if you should come across a copy of this and fancy something a tad unusual..a maybe with something for you to think about afterwards..this would do the trick, nicely.

I am not big on gore, but it sounds like a fascinating film nonetheless.

You could always 'avert your eyes at the appropriate time'..It's a weird little film but strangely entertaining.

I am going to see if my library has it. Yes I have to do that with alot of movies.

I caught it a good few years ago, and as far as I recall it was all you say it is. I'll see if I can find a copy to confirm or refute on second viewing.
