Ok, what movies do you think in 50-100 years, on Movie Boards of the future.... people will be talking about as classic must see movies...

You know..like now, I'm always saying, 'I can't believe you have never seen Metropolis , The Third Man, Sunset Boulevard or Double Indemnity...you have to see these movies'....

I'll start us off by saying Memento will be one of these movies in 50 years or so.....

TappyTibbons
ooo-nice idea. i'll go with American Beauty (even though it had some mixed opinions on here), if for nothing else then for the very beginning, very end, or very good parts in the middle ;)

SilverScreenAddict
Forrest Gump (pretty much already is a classic!)

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

LunaCity
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

cicero
If these aren't already considered classics:

Pulp Fiction
Shawshank Redemption
Schindler's List
The Usual Suspects

These ones i'm not so sure about but I hope they do:

LA Confidential
Million Dollar Baby

I'd like to think that in 2055 (when our grandchildren are watching 360 degree 3D, Holographic, interactive movies on special headsets) they can find the time to switch on the outdated, 2D TV screen and blow the dust off the antiquated 'DVD' player and still bust a gut laughing at Team America:World Police as much as I bust a gut laughing at old black and white Marx Bros. movies now!

Do you think the political content of it will still be accessable to kids of that age? Same for the jokes about the certain actors of our generation.

Charlie Croker
True...but there are references to themes and people who were topical in the 30's and 40's in Marx Bros films. Doesn't make them any less funnier..

Ozma
I think TAWP will always be funny....if for no other reason than the puppet sex scene.....also Spootswoode and Gary........well the whole damn movie is just so funny... :D

in the future......
Have have you guys ever seen that old puppet movie..they sing alot of goofy songs, make fun of people and have the best puppet sex !!!

Charlie Croker
Actually..it wouldn't surprise me if by 2055 TAWP has been remade using CGI...the songs have all been removed and it's no longer a comedy!

Grandparents will telling their grandchildren that ''It's not a patch on the original 'puppet' version''...

Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas will most likely become a cult classic.

One interesting thing I've noticed in many classic movies is how they reflect the fears of the era: in the 50s, for example, the fears of previously unimagined science (nuclear energy, for example) is reflected on screen by Godzilla. A film from the 90s would therefore reflect the fear of losing your privacy to a Big Brother type information network and the constant surveillance from intelligence gatherers.

Along that vein, I submit The Truman Show.

cicero

I will go with you on that. I love the Truman Show, also under your criteria you could put in Minority Report.

Charlie Croker
Following on from Aries' theory (which is very true) maybe 'The Day After Tomorrow' and it's 'Global Warming/Nature strikes back' theme would be a good example of 'contemporary fears'...assuming of course that by 2055 we're not actually in the middle of a new Ice Age or under 2,000 ft of water

Aries Walker
I was trying to think of a really deep, poignant "Nature Strikes Back" movie, but I just couldn't at the time. Many are done as mindless entertainment - Armageddon or Volcano, for example - which I don't think will have the same deep impact (no pun intended) as they could.

Yes I was trying to think of a 'serious' nature strikes back' film too but TDAT was as near as I could get...

Aries Walker
There's always Outbreak, but I don't see that being as classic as we're looking for. Good, not classic.

How about Philadelphia?

Ozma
I think they will still be talking alot about Tim Burton and Johnny Depp....Sleepy Hollow, Edward Sissorhands, Ed Wood.....

And probably any movie Johnny Depp was in......

El Mariachi
Magnolia
Amelie

Agreed. Kinda like the match of Hitchc0ck and his blondes....famous for being together.

Ozma
I'm thinkin' about actors as well..

Silver will agree with me here...you know how when we think movie star..I instantly think Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, Greta Garbo, Henry Fonda, Bette Davis, Kathryn Hepburn , Marlene Dietrich, Gregory Peck, Willam Powell, Gary Cooper...well I guess you get my drift...the list goes on and on....

They'll still be talking about DeNiro, Johnny Depp....weird, when we refer to Robert DeNiro..we always usually only just say DeNiro..Hmmm...anyway Harrison Ford....I think Harrison Ford is our Coop.....

got alittle off track here...

SilverScreenAddict
Yeah, Silver agrees :D

You're right, I always say DeNiro. I also always refer to Clint Eastwood as simply Clint and Jimmy as Jimmy, or "My main man" lol. Funny how we seemingly are so personal with these people we really know nothing about.

Ozma

Yeah, like The Duke..for John Wayne...most actors it is both names..I feel bad because I did not say William Holden...or Bill as some say....Coop for Gary Cooper...there aren't that many that we are really on a first name or single name basis with  .......Ok Olivier, we say that.....or just Lucy....

remember that episode with Bill Holden where she sets her putty nose on fire...after they had a run in at the Brown Derby earlier at lunch....

Course I remember that episode. I love the one where they steal Duke's footprints from Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Lucy then keeps them under her bed, and when Ricky finds out he makes her take it back, but of course she shatters it on the way and has to spend two episodes trying to get Wayne to re-do the footprints/signature hehe.

I'm afraid I'll have to fight for the title of "I Love Lucy Queen". I have also seen the episodes countless times including the 13 "Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" shows. :D

There was this awesome I Love Lucy jacket that this lady had...I need one hehe.

It always tickles me in 'This Is Spinal Tap' when they talk about playing a gig on 'The Isle of Lucy'

Okies Queen Mum hehe :D

Read on the internet that she is the most beloved dead actress. Jimmy Stewart was pretty high on the list and I believe Cary Grant was as well. ;)

I believe that for sure...

Yikes, that's a creepy sounding survey..."Who's Your Most Beloved Dead Actor?"

I really love all the I Love Lucy episodes. My friend is a bit obsessed with her (along with Shania Twain and Evita) and she has all of these biographies on her. She was a bit off her rocker you know, and difficult to work with. But aren't all actors? ;)

Yeah, I've read up on Lucy quite a bit. She could be pretty nasty and sometimes bossy. Her and Desi were not even speaking during the making of the last few "Lucy Desi Comedy Hour" episodes; it's so sad.

An interesting Lucy fact: She was a model in her youth, and went to NY to pursue a career; but she fell quite ill due to mal-nurishment and had to return home. They weren't even sure she'd recover!

"Who's Your Most Beloved Dead Actor?"
Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves

Yaaaaay!! We should start a thread on him. It would be an awful lot of fun.

Ozma
Keanu ReevesLMAO..you out did yourself there Mr. Parks....

Lola:Yaaaaay!! We should start a thread on him. It would be an awful lot of fun....that would be fun...we could have the worst of the worst, or the best of the worst, or the worst of the best........most life-like performance...most wooden performance....

LunaCity
Oh... Downfall. The definitive film version of Hitler's last days. It's in German, (what could be more appropriate), and I can't see anyone else doing a better job. It's got the production values and the acting quality. The chances of someone else doing another film on the subject, in German, that has all that and more is remote.

MattParks
Goodfellas
Mulholland Drive
Saving Private Ryan
Unforgiven
Reservoir Dogs
Eyes Wide Shut
Dead Man

Yea Gene, cut it out. :p

I drug this back up, there is some good stuff here and we touched on the subject in the Classic Movie thread. Ok, well I did.
I have thought of some other destined to be classic movies, for me the definition of a classic is, when you find out somebody has not seen whatever movie it is, you are saying, OMG, I can't believe you have never seen....

Picnic At Hanging Rock
Road Warrior
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Sin City
Ed Wood
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

MattParks
Donnie Darko
House of Games
A History of Violence
Office Space

edarsenal
Reservoir Dogs
Memento
Road To Perdition
Toy Story
Mad Max
Saving Private Ryan
Fight Club
Le Femme Nikita
Leon, The Professional
Usual Suspects

which is all i can think of right now

Ozma
This was mentioned early on in the thread, but it bears repeating and I like this thread...

Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, just watched it last night, and it is such a good off-beat movie. Unique, and makes you think afterwards about life and love and relationships and what's important in life. I like movies that don't just tell a story, but tell it in an unusual fashion, those are the ones that stick with you, forever. It's not like in a couple years I'd be standin in the Video Store and pick this up and think, Hmmm have we seen this ???
